Lighter Cook Out orders: what guests actually pick

Calories on the nutrition page are transcribed from Cook Out’s public PDF on cookout.com (retrieved August 31, 2026; the file is undated). We do not invent missing items. Confirm calories and allergens in-store. Unofficial tools on this site are planning sketches only.
Quick answer: A common lighter ticket is grilled chicken, a simple side, and unsweet tea. Skip the bun if you want fewer carbs. This site does not publish official calorie counts — confirm in-store or with Cook Out materials.
Cook Out is a burger-and-shake chain. The trays are stacked, the fries are fried, and Fancy Milkshakes are dessert-sized. You can still order with a lighter plan — grilled instead of breaded, bun off, slaw instead of fries, tea instead of a shake. Those are habits, not a lab-tested diet plan.
1. Lighter items people often order
We do not publish a ranked “lowest calorie” table. Cited figures live on the nutrition page (transcribed from Cook Out’s public PDF; the file is undated). What we can say here is what regulars commonly pick when they want a smaller ticket:
- Grilled chicken breast (often without the bun) instead of crispy or spicy breaded filets
- Hamburger or cheeseburger as a simpler main than a loaded Big Double
- Chicken or beef quesadilla as a smaller main or tray side
- Hot dog or corn dog when you want something smaller than a burger tray
- Side of slaw instead of fries, onion rings, or cheese fries
- Fresh brewed tea (unsweet if you are watching sugar) instead of a shake or float
- Veggie burger if you want a non-beef main — still confirm toppings and bun
“Lighter” here means relative to a Regular Tray with a Big Double, two fried sides, and a peanut-butter shake. It is not a medical recommendation and it is not official Cook Out nutrition.
2. Lower-carb / keto-style orders
A lower-carb order is doable if you skip the bun and avoid breaded items. That is an ordering pattern, not a certified keto menu.
Ask for a hamburger patty or grilled chicken without the bun. Some stores will wrap it in lettuce. Add bacon or cheese if you want. Drink water or unsweetened tea. Treat slaw as a possible side, but some slaw is sweetened — ask.
Skip breaded chicken, fries, onion rings, hushpuppies, buns, and milkshakes if you are keeping carbs low. We will not invent net-carb or protein grams for those items.
3. Gluten-sensitive modifications
Cook Out does not advertise a certified gluten-free kitchen. Guests who avoid wheat often ask for grilled chicken or a burger patty without the bun, and they skip fried sides that share a fryer with breaded items.
Cross-contact is likely: shared fryers, grills, and prep surfaces. This is not a celiac-safe certification. Tell staff about your needs and decide from what they say — see our gluten-free notes.
4. Lighter tray combinations
Option 1: Grilled chicken + slaw + a smaller second side (or skip the second fried side) + tea.
Option 2: Plain hamburger + slaw + tea. Some people double slaw instead of fries.
Option 3: Chicken quesadilla as the main, tea as the drink, and a non-fried side if the store will do it.

5. Milkshakes vs. fountain drinks
Fancy Milkshakes are large, hand-spun desserts. Fruit flavors are often described as a bit lighter than peanut butter fudge or cheesecake, but we do not publish a flavor-by-flavor calorie ranking. If you want a lighter drink, order tea or a fountain soda and treat the shake as a separate dessert.
For flavor ideas (not nutrition), see the milkshake tasting notes.
6. Smart ordering habits
- 1. Skip the bun on a burger or grilled chicken if you want fewer carbs.
- 2. Choose grilled over crispy chicken when you want a simpler main.
- 3. Order slaw as a side instead of fries or cheese fries.
- 4. Get tea instead of a shake if the shake would be dessert on top of a full tray.
- 5. Go Jr. Tray if you do not need two sides.
- 6. Load pickles and onions for flavor without extra fried sides.
- 7. Ask for no mayo if you want a simpler sandwich.
- 8. Confirm in-store — this page is a habit guide, not a nutrition label.
