Cook Out Sizes Explained: Cups, Burgers, Shakes and Sides
Published October 12, 2026
Quick Answer: Cook Out sizes, per Cook Out's own nutrition guide, are Small 12 oz, Regular 16 oz, Large 24 oz and Huge 32 oz for fountain drinks and fresh-brewed tea. Burgers come as Small (1/8 lb), Regular (1/4 lb), Huge (1/2 lb) and the Big Double. Milkshakes are one size, roughly 32 to 35 oz depending on flavour. Many sides come as a full order or a smaller side portion for trays.
If you have ever stood at a Cook Out drive-thru wondering how big "Huge" really is, this guide lays out every Cook Out size in one place. All figures come from the nutrition guide Cook Out publishes on cookout.com (the PDF was last revised in July 2025). Individual restaurants can differ, so treat the numbers as the chain's published reference, not a promise from your local store.
Cookout cup sizes: drinks and tea
Cook Out's guide lists four sizes for every fountain drink and for both fresh-brewed teas.
| Size | Ounces | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 12 oz | Kids, or a light drink with a tray |
| Regular | 16 oz | A standard fast-food drink |
| Large | 24 oz | A long drive |
| Huge | 32 oz | Sharing, or a full day of sweet tea |
How big a Huge tea is
A Huge Fresh Brewed Sweet Tea is 32 oz, the same as a Huge soft drink. The guide lists 330 calories for a Huge sweet tea, all from sugar, while a Huge unsweetened Fresh Brewed Tea is listed at 0 calories. If you love sweet tea but want less sugar, ask for half sweet and half unsweet; whether a store will mix them is up to that location.
Floats are different. The Coke Float and Cheerwine Float are each listed at 16 oz. See our Cheerwine float guide for what goes in one, and the Cook Out drinks menu for every flavour.
Cookout burger sizes
Cook Out names its burgers by patty size. The nutrition guide lists these served weights for a plain char-grilled burger, before you add a style:
| Burger | Name tells you | Listed serving weight |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1/8 lb | 3.2 oz |
| Regular | 1/4 lb | 4.4 oz |
| Huge | 1/2 lb | 7.2 oz |
| Big Double | Two patties | 6.5 oz |
The serving weight is not the same as the patty's raw weight in the name. It reflects how Cook Out measured the item for its nutrition guide. Use it to compare burgers with each other, not to weigh a patty.
Cookout Huge burger vs Big Double
These two get compared more than any other pair. By the guide's numbers, the Huge (1/2 lb) is the heavier sandwich at 7.2 oz against 6.5 oz for the Big Double. The Big Double is a two-patty burger, so you get more seared surface and a different bite, while the Huge is one thick patty.
Which is better is a matter of taste. If you want the most beef per dollar, compare the prices on your local board or our Cook Out prices page. If you want two layers of cheese and a crisp edge, the Big Double is the one people order. Both work with any style, and our burger styles guide explains what each style adds.
What a style adds
Styles are toppings, and the guide lists them as add-ons with their own weights. For example, Cook Out Style adds 4.5 oz and Cheddar Style adds 3 oz. That means the same Regular burger can be much bigger on the tray depending on how you order it.
Cookout shake size
Cook Out milkshakes come in one size. The guide lists most flavours between about 32 and 35 oz; a Vanilla shake, for example, is 32.9 oz. The exact weight changes with the mix-ins, so a chunky flavour can come in a little heavier than a plain one.
That makes a Cook Out shake roughly the size of a Huge drink. It is a lot of dessert. If you are sharing, ask for an extra cup. Browse every flavour on the Cook Out milkshakes page, or plan a custom one with our milkshake mixer.
Side vs full order
Several sides come in two sizes. The smaller "side" portion is the one that fits a tray; the full order is sold on its own.
| Item | Side | Full order |
|---|---|---|
| Hushpuppies | 3 oz | 6 oz |
| Onion rings | 2.4 oz | 4.9 oz |
| Chicken nuggets | 1.7 oz | 2.9 oz |
| Cheese curds | 1.5 oz | 3 oz |
Fries work a little differently. The guide lists Regular Fries at 4.2 oz, Large Fries at 8.4 oz and Cook Out Fries at 6.9 oz. A Large is double the Regular by weight.
For hushpuppy details, see the hushpuppies page, and for all sides, the Cook Out sides menu.
Chicken, BBQ, hot dogs and wraps
Sizes matter outside the burger menu too. Here is how Cook Out's guide lists the other mains, so you can compare them with a burger before you order.
| Item | Listed serving weight |
|---|---|
| Char-Grilled Chicken Breast | 6.67 oz |
| Spicy Chicken Breast | 5.61 oz |
| Chicken Strips (3) | 8.25 oz |
| Regular BBQ Sandwich | 8.8 oz |
| BBQ Plate | 17.3 oz |
| Hot Dog (plain) | 2.9 oz |
| Cook Out Style Hot Dog | 6.2 oz |
| Mexi Hot Dog | 7.3 oz |
| Cajun, Ranch or Honey Mustard Wrap | 6 to 6.2 oz |
A few things stand out. Leaving drinks and shakes aside, the BBQ Plate is the heaviest item in the guide, at more than a pound, because it is a full plate rather than a sandwich. Shakes are heavier still, which is one more reason to share one. Three chicken strips outweigh a Huge burger. And toppings make a big difference to hot dogs: a Mexi Hot Dog is listed at more than twice the weight of a plain one.
If you are choosing a tray main, a heavier main plus two side-sized portions can be a bigger meal than it looks. Our chicken sandwich ranking and wraps and quesadillas guide go deeper on those menus.
A sizing cheat sheet for a family order
Ordering for four people at once is where sizes really help. Here is one way to think about it, using the guide's numbers rather than guesswork:
- Start with mains. Two Regular burgers, one Huge burger and a chicken strip tray cover a range of appetites.
- Use tray sides for variety. Each tray adds two side portions, so a four-tray order gives you eight sides to share.
- Pick drink sizes by trip length. Smalls for young kids, Larges or Huges for adults on a long drive.
- Share shakes. At roughly 32 to 35 oz each, two shakes split four ways is plenty for most families.
Prices change by state and by location, so check the board or our prices page before you total the order.
Tray sizes
A Cook Out tray is one main item plus two sides and a drink. The side portions on a tray are the smaller "side" sizes in the table above, which is why a tray is such good value: you get variety without three full orders. Our tray combos page lists the mains and sides you can pick, and the best tray combinations post suggests pairings. Our ordering guide explains junior and regular trays at the speaker.
How to use sizes to order smarter
- Feeding kids: a Small burger and a Small drink is a sensible kid-sized meal.
- Big appetite: a Huge burger as a tray main beats ordering two Regulars.
- Sharing a shake: one shake easily serves two.
- Road trip: a Huge tea is 32 oz, so plan your stops.
- Watching calories: compare sizes with the Cook Out nutrition calculator, which adds up items as you build an order.
Sizes and nutrition go together
A bigger size is not just more food; it is more of everything on the label. The guide lists a Large order of fries at 694 calories against 347 for a Regular, exactly double, which matches the doubled weight. Side and full orders follow the same pattern: the guide lists a full order of hushpuppies at 600 calories against 300 for the side portion. If you want the full picture for a specific order, Cook Out's nutrition guide is the source, and our nutrition page summarises it.
Why your cup might look different
Equipment and cup stock can change over time. A cup labelled one way in one town can look different in another, and the chain can revise its guide. If the size matters to you, ask at the window before you pay. The full Cook Out menu on this site lists every item with sizes.
